West Ham United vs Sunderland Match Preview

Sunderland’s Darren Bent was bent on scoring against his old club Tottenham last weekend and although he got two, one of which was off a penalty, he rather amazingly failed to convert two other penalties.

Nevertheless, Bent’s two goals and Boudewijn Zenden\'s remarkable 86th minute volley sealed Tottenham’s fate on the day as the Black Cats took the honors at the Stadium of Light.

The biggest disappointment of the match may have been Anton Ferdinand’s Michael Jackson-esque goal celebration which was all for naught, since he was deemed offside. Pity! The man can dance.

At the other end Sunderland ‘keeper Craig Gordon kept Tottenham out of the goal with several fine saves, thus contributing to Spurs’ miserable afternoon.

Sunderland and West Ham drew 2-2 at the Stadium of Light last time they played. This weekend, at Upton Park, struggling West Ham will be determined to get the full compliment of points available.

Currently 17th in the league, the Hammers are one place and one point above relegation. They have no margin of error available. A loss or a draw with Sunderland combined with a Hull win puts West Ham in the drop zone.

Their encouraging 2-2 come-from-behind draw with Everton last weekend will provide manager Gianfranco Zola and his squad a morale boost as they get ready to host Sunderland.

Not helping matters at all, however, is West Ham’s injury list. They could almost field a second squad of convalescents. Berhami, Boa Morte, Collison, Dyer, Franco, Hines, Tomkins and Ilunga all under repair. Scott Parker is out through suspension.
